Improve your productivity using hypnosis
In this article, I’ll explain how hypnosis can improve your productivity. I'll also suggest some simple ways you can integrate it into your daily routine (and I'm not talking about meditating for long periods in the morning or evening).
The main two ways hypnosis improves your productivity is through its benefits on our brainwaves and behaviour.
To get my Master Certification of Hypnosis, I was required to do 14 days of face-to-face training, whereby I got hypnotised just as much as I practised hypnotising others. Since experiencing hypnosis my productivity and ability to focus, still surprises me. I've also gained certifications in various transformational coaching techniques such as NLP and Matrix Therapies.
Coaching and hypnosis helped me go from stressed, insecure, socially awkward, underpaid and feeling lost in my career. To confident, productive, purpose driven, with leadership opportunities and financial stability.
My hope is that you can step out of your own shadow, speak up for what you want and realise how capable and in demand you deserve to be.
Brainwaves
It is well studied that hypnosis is an effective tool in getting our brainwaves to the Alpha and Theta frequencies. Alpha is the frequency of rest, recharge and relaxation. A hypnosis induction is, from experience, one of the most effective inductions in inducing Alpha waves. One of the most common remarks I get from clients when they first experience hypnosis is “Wow, I'm surprised at how deep I went and how relaxed I feel”, and these are people that either had previously said “Meditation doesn't work for me”, or “I can't be hypnotised”.
Between the induction (start) and emerging (end), you'll either stay in Alpha or you'll continue to Theta brainwaves, which are slower than Alpha and are characteristic of a dream or lucid state. These are great for creativity, imagination and accessing to your intuition.
These are all keys to effective problem-solving.
The less studied brainwave is the Gamma frequency. This is experienced during intense focus when your brain is processing information. There was a study that indicated that while participants were focusing on their breath during a meditation, they exhibited an increase in Gamma brainwaves. During certain stages of the hypnosis, the type I write is a style of Ericksonian Hypnosis, there are periods of intense focus while both your conscious and subconscious mind takes in large amounts of information.
Even though I haven't found any scientific studies of Gamma frequencies during hypnosis. What I can tell you from firsthand experience, is that after a longer and more in-depth hypnosis, my brain sometimes feels like it has “overheated”. A similar feeling to when I have been focusing intently during a highly productive deep work session. I also can't deny how easily I now get into this state of productive focus.
The reason any of this matters for when you are not in hypnosis is that firstly, through hypnosis we train our brainwaves to recognise these states. Thus, forming stronger neural pathways so that re-entering the states of Alpha, Theta and Gamma brainwaves becomes easier to do anytime.
Secondly, by experiencing these brainwaves throughout the hypnosis we:
Increase our relaxation, decrease stress, and recharge our mental energy with Alpha brainwaves.
Unlock our creativity, imagination, and intuition, and therefore our problem-solving ability with theta brainwaves.
Practise intense focus and concentration with Gamma brainwaves.
Thus, you have a recipe for productivity.
Behaviour
The factor that probably draws most people to hypnosis, and then deters the other half. Is its ability to influence behaviour and even thought, at a subconscious level (as opposed to consciously) so that the improvements or changes become second nature, as opposed to needing to constantly remind ourselves. In a study half the participants were hypnotised and during the hypnosis were given the suggestions to send a postcard daily, the other half weren’t hypnotised and were instructed to send a postcard daily. A significant amount of the hypnotised group sent the postcards and reported that they just felt compelled to send them. Whereas the other group reported it felt like a chore they had to complete.
It’s through suggestions within the hypnosis that:
Help our brain create new neural pathways, enhancing an alternative behaviour to the one we're wanting to change.
Help our subconscious access the resources it needs to solve a problem.
Thus, even at a subconscious level we can reject any suggestion that is not for our benefit and accept any that are. A well written hypnosis is full of empowering suggestions, and when they are written indirectly, we easily accept them. Hypnosis is an important tool in quietening the conscious mind, as our conscious mind analyses all information and often rejects empowering statements as quickly as you reject compliments.
For example which statement is the hardest to accept:
I’m great with money and I am destined for wealth
I’m terrible at saving and I don’t even know what I spend my money on
Perhaps if not now, then maybe tomorrow, you will find that you are better with money and were actually always destined to be wealthy
We have unfortunately throughout our lives, accepted many negative suggestions and beliefs about ourselves and the world.
Hypnosis works to counter that.
When it comes to productivity some of the behaviours and even skills (which are behaviours that have been practised) that impact productivity are:
How easily we get distracted.
Our ability to refocus when we get distracted.
The organisation of our thoughts or information.
Problem-solving on the go.
Adapting the time management tools to the task.
Forward planning and preparation
In summary focus, organisation, problem-solving, adaptability and time management, all contribute to productivity. Fortunately, through hypnosis we can decrease how much we default to the behaviours that decrease our productivity, by increasing the new neural pathways for the behaviours we want.
The more we repeat the hypnosis and the more we repeat the behaviour that we want to stick, the thicker our neural pathway gets for that behaviour. Therefore, you also get the benefit of a lasting change as opposed to a temporary change.
As you can see hypnosis has a lot less to do with magic and magicians, and a lot more to do with science and psychology.
Habits
What then is the best way to integrate hypnosis into our already full schedules so that we can receive these benefits?
Firstly, you can do hypnosis at any time (except when operating vehicles or machinery). Unlike meditation, you don't need to do it first or last thing in the day for it to be most effective. One of the not-so-secret ingredients to the effectiveness of hypnosis is the powerful induction. I've listened to my own hypnosis at my work desk, on a plane and before an interview. When and where you listen to hypnosis will depend on the purpose of the hypnosis or the outcomes you want to achieve from it.
For the purpose of productivity, this is my proposed plan:
Listen to a 30-40 minute hypnosis once a week for the behavioural change benefits.
Listen to a 10-15 minute hypnosis prior to the task or work day, to prep your brainwaves for the task or project.
Bonus: Listen to a sleep hypnosis before bed to help strengthen the neural pathways you've been developing for productivity (hypnosis is kind of like a workout for your brain, and physical rest assists with the recovery of your brain just as much as it does for your other muscles).
Optional: Work 1:1 with a professional trained in hypnosis and NLP if you have any persistent behaviours or triggers that need deeper and more individualised attention.
If you are interested in experiencing any of my pre-recorded hypnosis check out the Resonance Kits. Otherwise, I also offer 1:1 calls online.
In June 2024 I'm holding a live free hypnosis online that has been developed specifically for focus and creativity. If you are reading this before the event, register and join live online. Otherwise, if it is after the event date, sign up to the email list and you'll get sent the replay.
No longer is hypnosis only being used as a therapy to reduce conditions and addictions. It is gaining popularity as a high-performance brain biohacking tool.
